***WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY is SEPTEMBER 10th***

***Did you know that 8 out of 10 people who attempt or die by suicide hinted about or made some mention of their plans?***

If you are thinking about suicide get help immediately!
-Ask a family member or friend for help
-Call your doctors office
-Call 911 or go to the nearest medical clinic
-Call the 24 hour Crisis Centre in Windsor: 519-973-4435
-Call the 24 hour Provincial Mental Health Crisis Line: 1-866-531-2600
-Call the 24 hour National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255

Evaluating a suicide risk:
1) Does the person have a plan?
2) Is the plan lethal?
3) Talking about or having a fascination with death
4) Are the means to execute the plan available?
5) Has the person suffered a loss (death, relationship, job)
6) Do they consider themselves a burden?
7) Do they feel alone?
8) Change in personality or behaviour (inability to concentrate, sad, withdrawn, anxious)
9) Change in eating habits
10) No hope for future
11) Agitation
12) Increased alcohol or drug use
13) Decrease in self-care
14) Poor performance at school or work
15) Is there a family history?
16) Giving away things that are important to them
17) Previous Attempt
18) Sudden dramatic improvement after a period of depression

DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK!
-Discuss the question of suicide freely without shock or disapproval
-Never underestimate the person’s suicidal intent
-Request a promise to contact you before he/she decides to pursue suicide intentions
-Listen, offer empathy, take action, get help, do not leave the person alone if they are in imminent danger
-Do not swear to secrecy
